Nostrification of foreign qualifications
Nostrification is the recognition of a foreign degree as equivalent to an Austrian degree. With the nostrification the complete equality with the Austrian degree is achieved. It is associated with the right to use a domestic academic degree.
The prerequisite for nostrification is that the nostrification is mandatory for practicing a profession or continuing education in Austria. It is checked whether an Austrian or equivalent degree is required by law for taking up a professional activity in Austria and on the basis of which (professional) regulations this is provided for. Nostrification is only possible if the study program completed abroad is equivalent to a study program established at the university with regard to the result of the overall education. The criteria for verification are the content, scope and requirements of the degree for which recognition is sought. If equivalence exists in principle and only individual achievements are missing for full equivalence, individual examinations can be issued as requirements by means of an official notice, and nostrification takes place upon fulfillment of these requirements.
