Populist Features of the New Testament
You are cordially invited to a guest lecture by Prof. Bruce Worthington on “Populist Features of the New Testament”.
Populism is a significant feature of political life in the 21st century. The New Testament has a part to play in the rise of populism in the West, insofar as it is discursively used by populist leaders as a shared system of signification in the construction of a “people.” The lecture will address features of populism in the ancient world, particularly those features which are found in the New Testament, suggesting that the New Testament provides a discursive basis for constructing populist identity then and now.
Prof. Bruce Worthington, PhD is Assistant Professor of New Testament at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is the Associate Editor of the journal “Critical Research on Religion” and the author of the recent publication, Alain Badiou and the Book of Revelation: The Emergence of a Truth (2024), along with a number of journal publications articles and two edited volumes. His current book project Populist Features of the New Testament is forthcoming with McGill-Queens University Press (2027).
The guest lecture is being organized in cooperation between the Department of Religious Studies and the Department of New Testament Studies.
